Visit to Friend's house (Old Fort)
It was a 26th January, and kind of perfect day for Rakesh to visit this place, where once his elders lived during the partition. It was his father’s birthday and for him what better would he have to celebrate it other than his father’s birthplace (Purana Quila barrack no. 40 opposite Pipal ka aped).
Getting the car parked in front of the Pargati Maidan we marched towards out destination at 1 p.m. our photo walk started from the Old fort Lake. Entering their, we realized that it would not be a peaceful walk as huge crowd appeared for enjoying their holiday. Hardly few steps we walked when we took out the camera and subjects hunting started. Rakesh was bit amused to see me in a trekking mood as for him I always use to be silent chap who doesn’t like to roam much or freak out. With my Nikon in my hand my mind thinks of nothing else but only and only photography. Dying to experiment some new techniques and setting I just asked Rakesh for his support and kept him saying bhai – aaja tujhe ek mast subject dikhata hu… and kept on clicking him in different poses until we reached the ticked house of the Old fort where large number of people were lined up for the tickets.
Rakesh was pretty excited to explore the fort. As soon as we entered into the fort he told me…. Bhai tujhe jaldi toh nahi he na aache se dekhenge pura fort…. I was nahi bhai no issues…. After a casual walk of 10 – 15 mins. We touched the boundary of the old fort alongside the Zoo. There was a huge wall on one side with many gates and windows in it. A few point we got so enthusiastic that we started to climb them to see the landscape on the other side and trust me it was beautiful. I never thought Delhi might look so beautiful with all of this materialistic jungle around.
Rakesh struggled at some places to climb up but he never gave up (huh tough guy). Walking along the boundary enjoying ourselves we step on the wall of fort facing standing against the ITO. It was very pleasant standing there with apart from rest of the cloud surrounded by the calm breeze and a soothing sun. one of the best moment of the walk. We decide to have our lunch their and enjoy the aroma for a while. After we had our lunch we walked down and think what we dropped the sunglasses of Rakesh but no worries to our luck we found them. And here Rakesh made a statement… bhai mene dekha he jin logo ka paisa aacha hota he na unke nauksan nahi hota…..
Moving on we almost explore the fort, when we noticed that there was a Trishul on the Top of a Masjid in the fort (see there God is one). As we were discussing it Rakesh received a call from his home, his grandma asked him to clicked the photo of Barrack no 40 opposite Peepal ka Ped – the place where his grandma lived once at the time of partition. We ended our walk locating the same and were pleased to capture some photos to cherish the memories of her grandma.

Rupin Valley (the trek that tested our life's)
Maintaining our track record of trekking we again get ready for one of the most exciting and awaited trip Rupin Valley.
I still remember when sir first shared the link of the place and man what a beauty it was. A glimpse of the picture made it so thrilling and I was like “sir ho jayega yeh trek it seems really tough” and sir as usual arey kya he yeh kuch bhi nahi he. we (sir, sanjeev and me) planned it for 1st june earlier. Somehow it planning encounter a flop execution. But we were not willing to give it up.
We again planned it and this time with a bigger group Himanshu Dutt (sir), Rajeev ji, Gagan, Manu , and me. We planned the trip on 17th this time just after 15 days and when the work load was maximum in office (as there is no use of moving out of office in free time… KYU SIR! )
Preparations were on early this time. As it is one of longest trek we would ever be undertaking. I bought a new sleeping bag for me and sir got the new tent. As the 17th was approaching entire group started to mingle up through mails. And by 17th we all knew little bit about each other. Exciting and energetic mails from every one was a common act to make their lively presence felt.
Finally the most awaited day came 17th. As usual sir and I left the office early. As Rajeev ji was waiting for us at south-ex market. He has to buy the trekking bag for the trip. Rajeev ji took the bag looking bit old as didn’t want to let her wife know that he has purchased the new one. He also threw the tags to be rest assured. It was almost 7p.m. and we were getting late, as Rajeev ji first has go to his home, get his belongings and then has to reach ISBT. Same with other too all have to go to home first.
Well we took an auto from the Sarojini nagar and reaches sir home. Where we had some food and waited for Manu. As usual Manu was on time and but sir has few work pending in the basket. Manu was worried now and said yaar late ho jayenge it already above 8p.m. bus miss ho jayegi dehradun se. mean while passed time by sharing about the camera I was impressed by the lens Manu was carrying this time.
Well finally we left for ISBT with all our language at around 8.30p.m. and were looking like refugees with heavy rucksack and a sleeping bag tied to it. Soon the discussion started regarding the track and it continued till we reached the ISBT.
GOD even after getting late we were the first one to reach. Sir soon started to confirm about others and we were informed by Rajeev ji that he would be reaching in few moments and meanwhile his friend Vijendra ji will be joining us for the trip. The final entry for the trip.
Vijender ji enter with a small school bag pack on his shoulders (that too stuffed with the old monks). We soon had an introduction and had some chit chat, meanwhile come the Gagan bhai. It was fun making him understand where we were standing. And Man he approached us as if he is gonna puch us. Just after the handshake Gagan was staright on the business (i.e. he slipped out for eating) while we were busy tracing Rajeev ji. Rajeev ji came soon and the call to catch bus has been made. But where is gagan and after lot of search Gagan bhai comes with the mcdonald’s burger and cold drink in hand stating “yaar halat kharab ho rahi thi bhookh se”
It was roughly 10p.m. when we caught the bus. Well, well we start a trip that too without any drama, NO NEVER. This time drama king was Vijendra ji, as he was left out and bus started moving. Rajeevi ji called him and made him ran from place to place before he finally gets in the bus at the exit gate of I.S.B.T
We all settled in tits and bits as we were the last to get in so unable to manage the seats together. Sir and Gagan bhai took the seat at the end of the bus. Vijendra ji and Rajeev ji right in front of bus gate. And Manu and me settled ourselves just at the back of driver’s seat.
Small chit chat was continuously on until we reached at the hotel at 1.30am, where we had something to eat. Rajeev ji and vijendra ji had bottles out and were in full mood with their omelets. And after that it was fun to stand besides them in bus. Rajeev ji started with his stories after he slept on the floor of the bus and asked vijendra ji to put leg above him as a safety measure.
At 6 in the morning we reached the Dehradun. We were releaved as we havn’t missed the bus yet. Hardly 10 -15 minutes were left for the bus to leave. So everbody runs here and there for urgent task. Rajeev and vijendra ji run to get money from ATM. Sir and me to attends the natures call followed by Manu and Gagan bhai. We took the tea and Bread pakoda from the shop at the bus stand and moved in the bus.
At 9.45a.m. we reached Damta where we just had enough time for snacks. Rajeev ji though not feeling well refused to take anything.. moving on we rached to Purola at 11.50 a.m and decided to halt there for sometime as Rajjev ji wasnot in good shape at all. Rather he took the place in front of a shop to rest. Sir meanwhile arranged a room and for few hours we had the room so that we Rajeev ji can rest and all other can get fresh.
After some rest and witnessing Vijendra ji impressive digestion (he ate all things but failed to attend the nature’s call, where the hell all the stuff gone.huh?) we moved for the lunch. And at around 1.30 we left for our next milestone Mori. Reaching Mori at 4pm. We straight away get in another jeep for next point Netwar(where we have to meet Raju, the arranger of the trip). Discussing all the things with Raju in Netwar, we finally moved to the first base camp of out trek Dhaula. All the way through to Dhaula we all enjoyed the nature beauty and sir repeatedly stated it is a place towalk rather than to do sight seeing sitting in the car.
We reached Dhaula at 6.45pm. and started looking for Rakesh who has to make our night arrangement for the night. We looked for him where the cab dropped us. No body knew him. We walked across the bridge over the vibrant river and asked for Rakesh at there. Same response nobody knew him. Sir and I shouted loudely from the other side to tell vijendra ji to go back and again confirm about Rakesh where taxi dropped us.
Finally, we traced him in the middle of the forest on the bank of the river Rupin. Three were sitting in their shorts when I shouted from the back Rakesh ji and one from them replied. We told him the entire stuff and asked them make our arrangements for night stay. They said we can’t, as they were not carrying the sleeping bags. Listening to this Manu got angry and stated “ bhaiya hum logo ne aapko paise isliye diye he ki aap yeh sab karo. Abhi toh trip start bhi nahi hui he and abhi se hume pareshani hone lag gayi he”. But we can’t do anything now. Gagan bhai and vijendra ji followed us. And by the time they were having discussion I ran towards a jeep going back to Netwar, as I have not informed at my home that from here on no singles will be coming. I stopped the jeep and gave him some money to make the call at my home (but I was still worried whether he is going to make the call or not)
When I came back to Rakesh ji our entire group was there and was eager to move down to river for taking bath. Sir and I advised them not to do that as is already late evening and water is chill. So they might fall ill. But all the guys were in different mood, they took no time to come in the underpants to have bath.
Sir and I moved back to house were we first enquired for Rakesh. While moving back sir and I jumped on few rocks in the middle of the river for the pictures. Sir climbed one rock further but coming back he slipped. My heart was in my mouth. And in no time I said “sir araam se”
Reaching the house we got the two rooms booked and asked him to prepare our dinner. We just relaxed in the room and when all came back we got the chairs out and sat with legs hanging on the boundary of corridors facing towards the sky. Drinks were out already and who don’t drink they were enjoying the biscuits and namkeen. By around 9 we had our dinner. Gagan was the one to attack it that too highest quantity and I was the one with the lowest quantity. After having dinner again hanged us to the corridors. Sir was the first one to move to bed. While Gagan and I were engaged in listen to the stories of Rajeev ji. At around 11pm we all decided to drop to beds.
Next morning when we wake up we found Vijendar ji and Manu sleeping in the corridors. Reason they stated on asking is it was suffocating in the rooms. I moved with sir to river for bath. On the way we saw a baby wolf running away from the jungle. Manu and Vijendar ji came soon too and we had some good fun climbing up and down the rocks. By 9 we came back and had our breakfast. Gagan bhai was the last one to have it rather he wake up when we already had our breakfast. Sir tossed Gagan bhai for getting late.
Well at around 10 am we were ready to leave with our guide (Devi singh) and two poters our heavy bags on our shoulder. The staring stretch tested us and we all were struggling with our breaths except Manu and Vijendra ji. The sun was bright and right at our head and with our rusted body our knees were clinching to take the step matching to the pace of our guide. Rejeev ji and followed by me and sir were the first one to ask for rest. And I was “sir yeh to watt lag gayi shuru me hi”
Well we gathered some breath and sir took the gamcha to cover his head and face from sun and we walked again. Our group got shattered in 3 groups one comprising of the Vijendar ji, Manu and poters which was leading from starting. Second group Sir, Gagan and guide. Third and last group was Rajeev ji and me were the laggers too. We all enjoyed the jungle berries while walking.
While walking some distance Rajeev ji suddenly had a cramp and fell badly on the trek. We rested for a while there and again walked with our chit chat. On some distance we me sir and I shared it with him. Sir from there took the bag of Rajeev ji as it was much heavier than the bags we were carrying. After this sir walked with us. We maintained our pace to comfortable level. On the way we crossed the house and saw small kids playing at the tree. It soon attracted us for the photos and sir and I took out our cameras and composed few best shots till date.
After that we continued our and approximately at around 2 pm. We reached a place from where Sewa is another 15-30 mins. But as we (Rajeev ji, Sir and me) were lagging way back. Soon we hits and woods and got misguided as there was two passage one going downwards and one going upwards. Rajeev sat on the diversion and sir and I went different on both the passage. Sir was with the opinion that downward passage will go to Sewa and I said no upward passage will go (though both would be going to Sewa). Sir agreed to walk on the upward passage. As we walked the forest got thicker and thicker and passage gets thinner and thinner. We almost sighted an end to the passage. Well, thing was pretty simple we were lost. We shouted the name of other group in order to trace them but no use. We sat there for while. Even at this moment we kidding (Socho yaha sher aa jaye, other says sochna kya he sher ko kahenge kha le bhai but hum bhag nahi sakte)
Then we decided to walk back. I don’t have the energy to go back all the way so I took the short cut, even though sir and Rajeev ji asked me to not to do that. We reaches on the other passage which was going downward and finally we heard the voice of one of our poter, oh God, I can’t explain how relaxing that was. The porter took the bag of Rajeev ji and then we all moved ahead. Few distance left to Sewa we relaxed in between near few house, were Gagan bhai was waitng. Gagan shouted on us likfe hell kaha reh gaye tum, dimaag kharab ho gaye mera and all. He even had fight with the porters as they were not willing to go back to search for us. Then we explain Gagan entire situation and he calmed thereafter. It was around 2.30p.m. and we were starving like hell. Rajeev ji said himanshu thoda rest karne de,,, please samjha kar aur nahi chala jayega. So we took out one of our mat and Rajeev ji slept over it. Meanwhile we asked the villages to give us the yellow colour fruit (CHULLU) that was kept for drying on the roofs. A child soon ran to hand us as much as he can. I looked at the fruit it was carrying some dust as well. But I was so hungry that I ignored that and ate them. Then we prepared some glucose and drink that. Rajeev ji wake up after half an hour and we moved thereafter.
We reached Sewa at 3.15pm.m and ate magi and had some tea. we stopped at a shop beside the temple. And clicked some pictures. Meanwhile I had a chat we our guide and my anger was very apparent during that. Vijendar ji and Manu consoled me over it. Then we all again left to our camp area. We were supposed to stop at Gosangu but due to time running from our hand we halted in between beside the river and it was a lovely camping side.
At around 5.15 we reached there and by 6pm we pitched our tent. To relax a bit we first got some soup prepared and lied down at on the mats outside the tent with gossip regarding our day. Soon we all planned for a bon fire and arranged it by 8pm. We all sat around it waited for the dinner. Meanwhile I saw Manu composing pictures. I took my camera too and went to compose the pic. While we were going towards the river we Rajeev ji walked out from behind the rock and looked for another position. Manu shouted arey karlo hum log waha nahi aa rahe. Then we composed tried composing the long exposure shot and it took almost half an hour to do that and trust me result was very deserving.
We had our dinner and soon enter out tents. Vijendar ji, Manu, Gagan and Rajeev ji in one tent. Sir , me along with our guide and poter in other. It was really suffocating for me and sir. And as we were struggling with our sleep, we heard loud laughter from the other tent. Man at night around 11 these guys were full of energy. Very soon we heard another voice,, Himanshu(sir), himanshu,,, we didn’t replied and the following statement was, abe abhi nahi sun raha agar bhaloo aa gaya tab toh tu bada sunega and again loud laughter.”. sir and I was kya ho gaya he inko. Then we tried sleeping but it was so suffocating in side that sir and I took off our jackets and sweater pretty soon and came out of our sleeping bag. Some how we managed to sleep and as I had some one of porter put his leg on me. God it was damn heavy and I was like… uffff…. I applied all my energy to get rid off it. In such thing we passed out night.
Then next morning we wake up and got ready. Rajeev ji surprised us by his decision that he would be going back. We forced him in the beginning but then we all agreed to his decision. We all walked towards Gosangu bridge at around 8.30am and reached there by 9.15am.It was Himanchal border. From here we got the jeep for Rajeev ji and left for Delhi. Then we walked towards out next destination Jhaka.
As we start walking after Rajeev ji left. We got a jeep. Everbody waas willing to hire it even for small distance while sir was against it. However, we hired it and in jeep the gagan and sir had a good quarrel. After going 3 kms jeep stopped and Gagan was angry now. He stated me nahi aa raha. We all tried to connvience him but he was adamant. Finally sir went and asked him. He agreed. On the way, he said to sir ”sale tujhe kya lagta he me chala jata. Mebilkul nahi jata agar jata toh tujhe lekar jata” haha….
The walk from here was really testing. The first step we took was on the steep downward slope of broken stones. And then steep upward slope on the mud. Then the road was much better. We rahed Jiskun at 12.45pm. and stopped there for tea. soon we continued our walk and thorugh the Jiskun village we reached the beautiful woods. we stopped near a lake and had our luch at arounf 1pm. Gagan took a bath here even we all ask him not to do that. We all sat on the small wooden bridge over the lake and enjoyed our lunch.
At 1.45pm we all again resumed our walk and walking after few meters we all faced the real tough trail. I was steep like hell and after every few step we were huuuu huuuuu… trying regain our breaths. At around 3.45 we reached Jhaka except Gagan. We waited for him for some time but he didn’t reached sir went back to look after him. Gagan was almost dead,,, his energy was almost to nil and he was in no shape to walk an inch. He order for some cold drink and some biscuits. We thought he will regain soon. As with Gagan the funds is energy = food. As food goes inside him his energy comes back.
In this image we walked towards our next camping area leaving the guide along with Gagan. Hardly we walked some distance and our guide came running and said sir woh toh chalne ki halat me buikul nahi he. And seeing the time it doesn’t seem feasible that we can make it to our next camping area. So we decide to halt back we came back and pitched our tents in the school compound at 4p.m.
School kids found it very surprising, for them we were like people from space. We had some tea in our tents and waited for Gagan. We all were damn tired, even the environment was depressing too until Gagan came to the camp. At 6 he came and was in much better shape. He brought missing cheer back to our lost spirits. We all cheerfully welcomed him and start with our eating stuff again.
But thing were yet not over for the day. In night at 7.20pm rain started. And blunder was our tent failed avoids the water seepage from the roof. We all had to hurry up and packed our tent and enter the tent of our guide and sat there. Rain was heavy and we all were worried. We thought we had to go back to the houses. But with God grace rain stopped. Soon we looked for the place of our tent to pitch again. We found an old house in the corner to avoid the rain. So we pitched our tent there. It was a horror movie scene.
Finally we were saved for the day from rain and we all stated that “ jo hota he aacha hota he agar gagan bhai yaha nahi rukta toh hum aage hote and huamre pass koi rasta nahi hota ek hi tent me beth kar raat bitane k ilawa.” We all had our dinner and went for the sleep and it was not comfortable too as the breeze was to strong in the night and the tent zipper just over our head provided the enough space for it. Somehow we managed for the night.
The very next morning our first thing is to get an additional cover for our tent to prevent it from rain. Our guide bought the same from the village and we all moved for our next destination at 7.25am. the walk was pleasant until we reached the river. There I asked the guide bhaiya rasta kaha he. And he replied pointing towards a rock standing like a wall “ yeh raha rasta” I was confused I again asked kaha he rasta and he again pointed to the rock then he said ruko dikhata hu and climbed the rock.
Man it was no that thick that we can ut oue foot properly. Sir was the first one to climb it. As he climbed his head banged to a same rock bulging out and hecontrolled himself and after crossing it checked out his head. I followed him and my amera got stuck and was enough to imbalance me and my breath stopped for a seconf seeing from where I will fell. I stopped for few seconds and adjusted my camera and carefully crossed it. But soon walking a head I slipped in water and shouted Gagan bhai. Gagan at first thought I am clicking his photo as my camera was held high. But then I agaon shouted and ran to pick me up. Uff… my entire left hand side is wet in water.
Well through such experiences we crossed the river and hit the woods again. We all fought hard with ourselves to keep walking to our destination. Crossing the jungle was a relief as we were in open space again. Then by 12.45 we reached Odari Thatch and had our lunch. The place is called “Odari thatch” as it means caves of bears.
The weather got bad while we were having our lunch. As soon as we finished our lunch and took few steps rain started. We all took out our rain coats and got packed in that. But the walk after it was really tough. It was very suffocating and even we struggled with the trek which was like a roller coaster. Some where one has to climb and other point has to come down. Many of us lost trek in between and then shouted each other name to get the idea of the trek.
Finally rain stopped and we all got bit relaxed after that. And moving forward we encountered the first glacier of the trek. It was really slippery our guide helped us to cross that. But while getting us crossed the trek he told that this is same place from where the villager slipped and lost his life. Listening to this Gagan bhai got worried and crawled on the glacier rather then walking. And after crossing it he stated” yaar tum pagal ho cross karte time bol rahe ho ki yaha se gir kar koi mara tha”
Well, after this we all reached to Thatch at around 4 pm. This is just at the base of the Rupin glacier. Our destination was Arjun Chadda which is few km up from here and is very steep. But looking at our physical condition we all decided to stay here only with the decision that we all we move early tomorrow to cover up the lagging part else it would not be possible to cross the valley as after 12pm the weather at valley gets very bad and it is not feasible t cross the valley.
We all entered in our tents and relaxed for the day. After some hot discussion between sir and Manu, we all eased up and relaxed later.
But the next morning came with the surprise, Manu is going back. Manu refused to move forward. Earlier we thought is because of the quarrel that took place last evening but then Manu cleared that he don’t want to take the pain and would rather enjoy being at the village. So finally he moved back. Though we al wake at 5 in morning but left for Arjun Chadda at 7 a.m. and the reason is as usually Gagan bhai not ready.(HAHAHHA)…
Well seeing the trek ahead, I said to myself thank God we didn’t tried it yesterday. It was Damn! steep that to through over the broken rocks. At many point we struggled to get stable and used our entire body to escape slipping away. We crossed and other glacier and then again the steep uphill. Thought the distance from our yesterday camping area to the Arjun Chadda is hardly 2-3kms. But we reached there by 11.15a.m that is we took more than 4hrs to make the distance that is way way back our usual speed which is 3-4 km in an hour,(I hope you ca realize the toughness of trek from this).
Gagan was still struggling and his pace dropped drastically. After every few step he was taking rest. Gagan bhai stated “saale energy nahi he khana nahi khaya he mene ,, tab se dhakkan me pani pee raha hu” well some how we made to the starting point of the valeey and only last 3-4 kms are left of the trek. But weather started to show its colours. We asked our guide what should we do, he stated karna kya he valley cross karenge. So we all took out rain coiats again and covered ourselves properly. AS soon as we crossed few meters on the snow. We found ourselves in the crust of snow. The snowfall soon started with strong breeze and will all struggled with our walk. Many times our foot got stuck in the snow and we have to apply our entire force to get ourselves out. After several such incidents it has become hard for us to pull out ourselves without other help.
The snowfall got heavier and heavier and we struggled locating the path too. In the middle we crossed the small tributary. And as soon as we reached the Footstep of the Rupin Valley. Our porter start to cry and said saare maroge, me nahi rukunga, me toh wapas ja raha hu, while our guide stated it only 500 meters left this side once we cross it it will be fine. But that 500 meters were too much for us. Al of us was struggling and our physical temperament started to lose it ground. Mean while Gagan shouted from the back,, Saalo pagal ho gaye ho ya marne aa ho kya yaha par,, pahad dekhne the dekh liye na” I replied bhai thoda sa aur he kar lete he,, but Gagan was too furious at that time and our poter ran back. Seeing him we also decided to walk back. Our guide got angry and left us and walked quckly. Though we asked him to pitch the tent some where nearby but he refused and stated ki agar yaha tent laga liya toh sabki lashe milegi subh.” We insisted because gagan was in no manner fit to walk back. But we have no choice now and we all walk back. We all four were alone and as our poter ran away and guide was too quick to catch. In the heavy snowfall, and mist covering all around we all have the only option to trace back the footprints. But even that was not easy gagan was struggling from him every step was hard and we were shouting from the back gagan chal bhai chal,,, nahi toh saare marenge,,, paron k nishan mit rahe chal bhai chal,,, gagan still find it hard I was the one following him immediately so finally I decided to over take in order to keep the footprint… but as soon as I was pacing myself I got stuck in the snow… and entire left leg was in the glacier,,, I tried hard hard but with loads on my shoulder I was not ablr to pull out my leg…. Thank GOD,, one poter was still with and I finally shouted bachaooo… and he applied his entire force to pull me out. Finally, I was out and I again started to rush and rush for life. Our senses were completely numb we all just wanted to reach to a safer place. Soon after that I again aliped and my hand was banged against the stone inside the glacier it swelled badly. But I had no time to spare for that walk and walk was only going in my mind. All other among the group faced the same situation. But we cannot stop. Tumbling on the snow road we almost reached the starting point of valley and saw our guide sitting over the small rock little a kid who is angry when he doesn’t get his things.
We said to him devi ji yaar aise thodi na karte he and all. But he was very anguished and noded in very dull manner. And then we walked for the arjun chadda to hault at night. We all reached back at arounf 4.30 to Arjun Chadda and pitched out tent near the hut of the sheperd’s. we all were exhausted badly and our stamina seems to bend it knee this time. All of us caught fever and we all took the medicine that night to avoid neumonia.
Well the next day was a kind of blessing and we all wake in better shape after shivering all the night. We decided not to cross the valley and moved back. Our guide offered the prayer to Rupin pass and we all ate the parsad.
And walked back we cannot stop before Jiskun as we all were running late to our schedule for reaching delhi. We all started and to surprise this time the leader was Gagan bhai and devi said yeh kal aise chal lete toh hum valley cross kar lete.(hahha,,, gagan bhai devi bhaut naraz he aapse).
Sir was limping as his left leg knee was not bending due to damage of last day trek. So sir and I dropped our pace to huge extent and kept on walking without taking rest. At around 6 in the evening we reached the hault point Jiskun. While coming back all the villagers were laughing at us that we are not able to make it to the valley. It was damn insulting but we cant do anything except to laugh in grin.
Manu was also resting at Jiskun we all were recharged after seeing him, the next morning we left quickly and made it to Gosangu to catch the jeep to reach Shimla. On the way back we covered the highest motorable pass that is Chanshal Pass. It was a very wonderful experience to halt our car right at the top and feel the wind that is strong enough to shake the car too. Spending less time we all moved forward. But we realized that we can make it only till Rohdu as we were late and all the buses had already left. We have no other choice but to look in for some room to stay.
Finally we got two rooms and we all relaxed ourselves. In the night sir and I walked out to gather things for dinner. We bought some cookies, pepsi, bread and butter. And filled the bread with the namkeen along with butter and had the same in dinner. Soon Gagan and vijendar ji came to after having their dinner and said that the food is not good. We were happy that we make good choice.
By 11 we all slept and next day caught the first jeep to Shimla and from their straight the bus to Chandigarh and then to Delhi.
With the next plan on charts we all dispersed and awaits for the next trip with full enthusiasm

Tarkeshwar Mahadev
Trip to Tarskeshwar Mahadev:
Almost a month and a more, and our restless inside was dying to undertake a new trip. Sir (himanshu sir) don’t we get bore of this materialist jungle soon!
This time we don’t have too many days at our disposal. As only Sunday being off we can only extent the leave to Monday. So considering our constraints we decided to take a small and a refreshing trip. After a lot of discussion we agreed for Tarkeshwar Mahadev.
Meanwhile, my friend gaurav also approached me to for a trip. I discussed the plan with him and asked sir whether they can join in or not. Sir agreed and gaurav and harish too agreed ( though gaurav and I had to work hard to convience harish. Sentences like “hum bhi to ja rahe he na”, “tu jaha se kehga wapas aa jayenge”, “kya yaar hum bhi toh chutti le rahe tu nahi le sakta kya” ).
Finally all things were set for evening at 7p.m. at I.S.B.T. things were funny since mornings this day. I reached sir’s home in the morning as we had plan to go to office on bike so that we can came back to sir’s home quickly from office in the evening. Sir and I was dressed ditto, same woodland green shirt, same levis blue jeans and same pair of addidas shoes. So sir finally changed his shirt to avoid consequence of being dressed same in the office.
Well the time to gather at kashmiri gate was 7:15p.m. But harish, gaurav and me reaching on time is never possible either of us would be late and as usually this time too I was late. We left sir’s home at 7:15p.m. and reached I.S.B.T at round 8 p.m.
As soon as we reached their and gaurav approached me to shake hand and I handed him the shoes in hand (le pakad and jo karna he kar). Then I introduced sir, harish and gaurav (nickey) to each other. Hardly! They all took the time to gel with each other and seeing this I was relaxed, as my biggest worry regarding the comfort level with each other is over.
At around 9 pm. we left the I.S.B.T. and by that time nickey was in its full colors (shuru ho gayi sale ki harkate). At time harish has to hold him tight to shut his mouth but nickey toh nickey hi he. Anyways, the time passes by and around 10pm. we all started feeling hungry. Nickey soon took aloo ki puri and achar which was awesome. Having that we all relaxed in our seats. To a surprise harish this time clicked a photo using flash at around 11 in the night. And a man from back shouted “bhai meri photo kyu li” and sir replied “aapne ghar me lagane k liye”. Grt…
At around 12:45 a.m. bus stopped at a dhaba 20kms away from Khatauli. We all were full so just took some grams( which was not good). By 3:30 in the morning we reached kotdwar from where we soon took another bus for Tarkeshwar after having some tea. All the way from here on I was sleeping on the shoulder of nickey. At around 6 a.m. we get down at Adhariakhal few kms away from the temple as sir want to enjoy the nature by walking the closing distance.
Just getting down the bus we all put back our jackets due to chillness. It was a great decision by sir as listening to the chirping of the birds early morning that too standing in the middle of the nature is the experience of its own. We tried locating the birds listening to their noise but failed to do so. Moving on sir and I was surprised by the quantity of Burash(rhodendoren) around us. We picked few flower and sucked the juice and ate their leaves. Doing so, this harish was bit hesitant.
In some time, sun grew brighter and our jacket went back in our bag. Walking made us hungry
and this time nickey took out the home made namak parey. (harish here confessed that “ ki nickey jab me tere ghar aaya than a toh mujhe yeh bhaut aache lage the. And jab tumne khana band kar diya tha tabhi me khata raha”. And nickey replied “tabhi me plate andar le gaya tha kyuki mujhe pata tha tu toh rukega nahi”.)
With all such chit chat we all walked towards our destination at a good pace. But pace of sun rise is also good. Soon we all started feeling the heat and nickey said “kash yeh pahad dusri taraf hote”. While walking on, we (except sir) noticed the biggest lizards till date and clicked few pics of them by getting as much closer as we can. At around 7.30 a.m. we reached “Chautiyakhal”. From here 5 km distance is yet to be walked down (one can have buses till this point). At 8.15 a.m. barely 2kms away from the temple we has our breakfast (cold drinks). As we walked few steps the shopkeeper of the other shop shouted “kuch khana tayar karna he”( which we can have while returning from the temple). We refused and walked ahead as we were not sure yet whether we would be coming back from the same route or not.
We reached the temple in not much time and the very entrance gives you the feel about the temple. It was surprising to see thick and sky touching Deodar trees at such an altitude height. In the name of lord Shiva we all walked ahead. And just crossing the entrance sir and I stopped for some pictures while gaurav and harish walked ahead and sat around nearby.
After this we all decided to get fresh. For sir and me it is a common thing to get fresh in jungle, But harish and nickey,,,, hahaha,,, they were really shy or hesitant for the same. Seeing this sir and I said bhai fresh hona he toh ho jao nahi toh hold it till delhi :P. finally harish and nickey decided that they cant hold it till delhi.
After this we all went to the kund for the bath. As the kund was full of trees leaves and other things, seeing which nickey decided not to bath. But sir, harish and me have no issues as such. We took the bath then went to the temple. The temple is a small old structure cement hut surrounded all around by the huge deodar tress. Through which even sun light fails to penetrate properly.
But sir told things have change a lot. As per him earlier the sculpture of Shiva used to be placed under a tree only the forest is much thicker. Also only one option for stay is available their. But know things were different there was even a canteen to have food. After offering the prayer at temple we sat for sometime in the jungle and took out he aloo puri and aachar. While we eating the same a family sitting nearby were chasing the cow looking for food. Seeing this, sir gave one puri to the cow but the after that we all have to leave our place and gave the remaining puri to cow. What a scene that was.
Well, then we left to Lansdowne after canceling our plan to go to sir nanibhau village. But the most interesting thing of the trip happened now. Walking back we collected our wet undergarments and wow harish and mine was not there it was stolen or taken away by mistake whatever but the thing is they were not there excpet sir’s one. ( due to this harish faced lot of problem as he carried only with him).
And nickey got new topic for his bakwass, he soon started “ aaj ki tazza khabar aaj ki tazza khabar. Jungle me do underwear lapata. F.I.R likhne par police ki anakani. Dawaab me aakar police ne F.I.R likhni and saare raste par pabandi bhadayi gayi. Har aate jaate bande ki talashi li gayi. Par abhi tak police nakam.”. This all sound so weird while writing but at time we all had a blast accept harish (as he was carrying only one).
Walking back we stopped at the same shop, who’s owner asked for the order and we didn’t said anything. But now he is the king he told us sir mene toh kuch banaya nahi and then we asked him to prepare jhuli chawal. But soon a car stopped and gave him some big order than us. So he tried to manipulate our order too and told ki time jada lagega and all . So we decide to walk out.
And we stop at the same shop we had our breakfast. And order the maggi. But due to breeze so much of dust is their. Sir harish and nickey ate their magi in those conditions only while I entered the shop and ate their.
After this we move for chautiyakhal and our target was to catch the last bus for Lansdowne which reached there by 2.30p.m.. The closing few 100 metres harish and nickey ran to stop the bus. Finally we managed to catch it. The bus stoped at the burash juice centre at Adhariyakhal and we bought some for us.
By around 3.45p.m. we reached the bus stand of Lansdowne and start walking. Initially I was very sleepy but few lovely sight of birds refreshed me. We carried our walk and reached the entrance gate of cantonment area. Sir warned us to pack our camera’s as it can create problem. We did the same. We all were very thirsty and tired after walking so much in a day. And while crossing army building we fail to control our thirst and asked for the water. They were so nice. As soon as we asked for the water one army man climbed the water tanker to fill the jug and brought the glasses so that we have no problem in drinking water ( really we salute the Indian Army) thanking them we all moved on to search our night halt place.
Sir sighted the PWD rest house and searched for the chaukidar to talk about staying. The chaukidar guided us to the officer in charge for the permission. Sir asked us to be descent and made me stand in the front. He then told the officer that we all are pursuing Ph.d and need a room for a night to stay and with first sun rays we will leave. Sir managed to convience the officer. And stayed the the pwd rest house. The cheapest halt we ever made for so many facilities.
Around 5.30p.m. we went to market for snacks and stopped at the bakery shop. We enjoyed the biscuits and nan-khatayi and then walked nearby. We went for dinner at same time only, as there is no snese to come to room and then walk back for dinner. The hotel was cozy, we order sabzi and roti while nickey order chowmien. Food was not at all impressive. And chowmien was horrible too much spicy. I don’t know how nickey managed to eat it.
Well then we searched for the ice cream but to our luck ice cream parlor was closed. We took cold drink and chips and moved to room. By around 9 we all slept.
6 in the morning we wake and sir was the 1st one to move out as usual. I followed him with my camera. We noticed birds, sir went back to bring biscuits from them. Sir break few biscuits and threw them but birds didn’t came nearby until sir and I moved back from our places. Well sir move in the room and I hide my self behind the pillar to click some pics of birds eating the biscuits. I succeded to some extent.
We all got ready and sat outside our rooms enjoying the morning waiting for the tea. Meanwhile sir and nickey started discussing about their school and colleges days. We all had blast on many occasion and by 8.30a.m. we left for delhi.
We took the jeep till Kotdwar and on the way I puked. After which I slept and my friend’s made a video of mine which was really awesome. Well after this we soon catch the bus to the delhi and reached delhi at 4 and straight away entered the mcdonalds to have burger and coke. And with the dream of new trip in some time we all left to our home.

Sankhri: Lekha Top (the Land of kaurvas)
Heading directly from our offices to I.S.B.T is something we are use to. So in order to carry out our “parampara” (customs and traditions), we again reached from our offices to I.S.B.T. But with the added flavor this time. Around 10 in the morning Friday 22nd Jan ’10 I received a call from Sir (Mr. Himashu Dutt) for a simple question what are you Doing Today? To which I simply replied nothing much sir.
Answer was enough for sir to tell me “okay dear than pack your bag and meet me in the evening at I.S.B.T. we are leaving today”.
I hurriedly contacted my mom and seek the permission for the same as my sister has already warned me of getting my trip cancel. Mom said YES! And in no time I am out of office went back home packed my bag and reached sir’s home.
I got bit late, as result of which I missed out my “Garma Garam Dosa”. Soon Manu another companion for the trip entered. Sir introduced us to each other and soon we all were in comfort zone. Enjoying our comfort we left for the trip at around 8:15 p.m. reaching I.S.B.T at 9:10 p.m.
Hold on! The biggest surprise I Forgot, the trip is for Sankari Now and not for Chakrata as Raju(Our Guide) was in
So, now looking for the bus, we got one leaving at 10:30 (this was the earliest). Some how we guys killed our time chatting. Finally bus moved at 10:45 and we made calls to our home as usual.
Making call reminded me something. My mom asked sir to be careful to which sir generously replied "aunty hume toh sirf bus mebethna he, baki sabh toh bus k driver k haath me he". Bravo!
Soon the clinching noise of windows started, Sorry but this time it was like a melody out from the busy and material sounds of
At 5:30a.m. We reached Dehra-dun and checked for the bus to Purola. The first bus would be leaving at 6:30; we looked for some other option leaving early, but failed to find one. So we settled ourselves in the bus after some tea. Reaching Purola at 11:45 a.m. we tool lunch and get ourselves seated for Mori by 1p.m., reaching Mori 2:10 p.m. we again took the final jeep for Sankari and finally we reached Sankari at 4p.m. (almost after 20 hrs leaving our sir’s home).
But still our spirits were not down, soon we booked our room in GMVN and went for a walk and after a long and peaceful walk we came back by 6p.m. to our place. At around 8 we got out for dinner, just moving out we saw towards sky and for the first time in the life we all witnessed moon so beautiful as it was surrounded a by big circle of light(sorry fails to explain that beauty in words). Well after a good dinner we decided for a small walk. But his time walk wasn’t peaceful at all. As the stray dogs were not happy seeing outsiders so we decided to walk back. Moving back 2 two dogs approached us and whoa! Manu got bit scared, we kept our calm and let them sniff us and do jumping around as We trust Science Completely That “Every Action Has A Reaction” .
Day-1
Very early in the morning (4 a.m.) we called-off our sleep and bed by 6 when sir opened the door for the fresh air. As decided by 8 we were ready to leave for trek. But my fitness sign and the time crunch started a debate over “were to go”. My wish was Kedar-Kantha, Sir and Manu’s Wish was Har-ki- Dun, but soon Raju suggest a
Taking a jeep we reached
By 9:15 a.m. we reached Jakhol, the land of kuravas. Jakhol! What Surreal it was. Almost 350 families leaving here but the peace and the calmness of the place speaks for itselfThe snow covering the place all-round and the sun was high with soothing warmth.
The children and the people were excited and gave us a warm welcome which I personally received for the first time. Our Camera’s were toy to watch out not only for children but even for adult, which was clear when one elderly person approached me and in his own language spoke something, I some how understood that he wants me to click his photo and show to him, I did that but his excitement surpassed my understanding as he wants to try my camera. I allowed him to view from it, ensuring that I am properly holding my camera.
Well after lot of fun and interaction and after stuffing ourselves with Maggi we walked to our destination Lekha – Top. The very start was slippery, as manu slipped in the starting and then we realized that we are walking on the ice. So we holded our camera’s tighty and carefully moved until reached some fresh snow. The surroundings soon turned white, as covered with snow all around. And we enjoyed the every bit of it. Walking through the lovely ridge puts me back in the game and I am recharged.
By 1 p.m. we reached Lekha top. Raju explained all the ranges. Sir and we all lie down there after composing as many pictures as we can. There was a small temple their which resembles a bravery of a villager who came on tiger and took the revenge.
At 1.45 p.m. we decide to walk back. Raju suggest to take the other route as the last bus to the Sankhri would have left. So we took the other route. In starting it was a fun but soon it turn to a pain as steep slope with jerks were hard for our knees to bear.
Well we reach to road by 3.45 p.m., that means in short we missed the bus. We sat on the road corner to regain our breaths and waited for some other option to move to Sankhri. Meanwhile manu and raju indulged themselves in quarrel and Manu in already irrited finally stated that “I am not a trekker I am nature walker. So please don’t compare me with expeditions.” Waiting for long we again started waking. Issue was same whether to opt for road or to go through the trekker route manu said road and we all agreed seeing his irritation level. But in middle we took the trekker route too.
Finally we reached Sankhri by 6 p.m. we had a tea and went to rooms. Soon we came back for dinner. Raju also joined us for the dinner. He was drunk. In this state he confessed that “ ki mera dil bahar nikalne ko ho gaya tha jab saurabh ji aapne waha pani me jump mari thi. Dekho pahad kabhi jhukta nahi tut jata he. Isliye isse kabhi mat takarao”. Sir also joined him. (mummyyyyyyyy)
Well after a dinner we walked around. And while returning th GMVN guys asked for the rent as someone has complained that we are staying here for more than one day. So sir went to the GMVN owner to discuss the issue. And by the time manu and I enjoyed the hills in dark for the first time. We sat outside our rooms and felt such calmness for the first time.
Sir came back and told “ ki who toh full tight he use kuch nahi samjh aa raha. De do inhe jo dena he”and finally we went to the sleep.
Day-2
We wake by 4.30 but left bed by 5.30. Manu got a scolding by sir early morning. That if he was awaken why didn’t he wake us and as a result we have to miss our bus. By 7 we left the rooms and quickly went to catch the last bus.
By the time bus was ready to leave we had the tea and played with the dog named “doggy” the strongest among all. He was so strong that he will make you off-balance if he touches you slightly.
At Mori bus stopped for 15 min and we walked to have some tea. Sir got mad after jalebi and ate only that. He ate 250gms of jaebi on his own. While manu and i shared some pakode with tea. But by the time I would have sipped my tea the bus started to move and so I have to leave it which I didn’t like.
An old lady was standing in the bus. So I offered him my seat. Seeing me standing for long manu offered his seat to me which I again gave to an old lady who can’t even stand properly. Manu got angry seeing this and told me “ meri seat tunne kyu di. Tu kya pure rasta khada rahega sabko seat de dekar”. Sir and I smiled over it. But smile didn’t stay long as the bus driver put the tape on that too very loud. And the speaker was just next to my left year. So it was really irritating. When we got out of the bus my one ear was almost deaf for few minutes.
We reached vikasnagar at 2.45. and drank 2 glass each of sugarcane juice and catch the bus for Dehradun and from there to Rishikesh.
At 8.30 we reached Rishikesh and for the first time in my life I saw a dear while crossing the jungle road to Rishikesh. Soon we reached Muni-Ki-Riti and booked our rooms. There sir met one of his office college and he made us end our day in sweet mood but getting us the rasgulas.
Day-3
Waking up at 5.45 we left for a walk in the near by area and enjoyed the lovely morning in the lovely woods. We returned back soon and left for the Ganga Ghat to have a dip. I also agree for the dip. But seriously after reaching there and touching the water I thought about my words. But once said means said. So sir and I had ours dips in water and mummy it was freezing manu was not interested and was enjoying the photos.
After this had our breakfast at Geeta bhavan. Their manu got serious and casually i asked him is everything ohk. first he replied nothing. But seeing him in the same state i again asked him " bhai sab theek he na" bu t this time manu showed his agression: " kaha na kuch nahi, Sab kuch batana jaruri hehe tujhe". Sir and i got surprised and looked at each other. After that we passed a silly smile and continued with our aloo- puri. but by the time we finished our breakfast manu was again in good mood. finally, on a good we then left for the delhi.

Almora-Vridh Jageshwar- Binsar
After the Roop Kund trek it’s almost five months now, I being pissed from intelligence of knowledgeable stupid’s. And what could be the better stress-buster than trekking. Believing the same, I (Saurabh Singh) soon accepted the offer of Mr. Himanshu Dutt(sir) to accompany him On the trip of Jageshwar which we later extended to Binsar(bird Sanctuary).
On Firday 27th nov 09 I left for the Anand Vihar to catch the bus for Almora, sir will be coming from the office. Around 12:45 p.m. I left the home and walked a km to catch the bus. As always trekking starts from home only. The bus was fully loaded, being afraid to reach late at Anand Vihar, I forced my foot on the 1st foot rest and put my hand inside from the window in order to hold something, pleasure added soon with the bag-pack belt forcing against my shoulders. Uff!! some-how I manage to hold on till Rohini West. While paying the fair I asked the helper of the bus, when I didn’t entered the bus all the way for what shoud I pay for?
Taking metro from Rohini West I reached Dilshad Garden and from their I took another bus for the Anand Vihar. I reached their by 2.30 p.m., as sir was late I had cholle Bhatoore and then made myself seated at shed no.97 from where we will get the bus. Sir reached by 3p.m. and soon we searched for the bus and we found something interesting that crowd is mad after the buses to Muradabad. Entering from window in running bus, when doors were found shut by the people was a common sight.
We reached at Muradabad at 9p.m. to attend a sir’s childhood friend(Mohit) marriage. Sir had a blast with his group that gathered on the occasion and also danced a lot which came like a surprise to me. Because we always believed, Himanshu sir and dance…. Nahhhh!!!! Never!!!!. But it is rightly said big surprises comes in small packages.
Leaving from here at 1:15 a.m. sir’s friend Deepak dropped us at Rampur at 3:30 a.m. Soon we took bus for Haldwani and from their finally a jeep to Almora at 5:30 a.m. We reached Almora at 8:50a.m. and looked for Jeep to Jageshwar. Waiting for around 20 minutes we got one jeep at 9:20 which is going to Dhaniya. The jeep dropped us at Artola at 11:10 a.m. from where we decided to walk the remaining 3kms to Jageshwar.
Day- 1
The walk after so much travelling was very refreshing and pleasure added once we touched the woods. After walking for almost one Hour we rached Jageshwar and looked for Rest house. We found Jagdamba a Suitable one.
Without wasting the time we had a bath with cold water in the open and left for the Temples. Within 10 minutes we reached at Temples and I was amazed at the architecture of 8th century. But exploring it wasn’t so easy, as one has to remove the shoes before entering it. And walking on the cold floor that too wet was something hard for our feet to bear. The experience reminded, “No pain, No gain” Dear.
Jageshwar is one of the 12 Jyotir-Ling. It is the only Jyotir-Ling where Parthiv pooja is done. The oldest structure among group is of Maha-Mrityunjai. The Pujari there rather than describing handed us the book and asked us to read that for the details. After exploring the temple as much as we can we left to rest house and had the Daal-Bhaat at around 5:30 p.m. as we didn’t had anything from last night.
Sir felt asleep as soon as he hit the pillow. I though put my dairy entry. After sometime I also felt asleep and we wake up when the rest house keeper got the dinner. Both of us hardly had a 3 chappati, and again moved to bed. Having no reason I wake at 8:30 and asked sir that I want to call at home. In the strong chilly breeze we searched for the STD but didn’t find one. So we slept again. But night seems to be too long this time as we waited for it to end from 2:30 a.m. onwards.
Day-2
Morning came with bliss, we tried to feel the same around 6a.m. and in this blissful sight we walked to another mystery of the area Vridh Jageshwar which is 3kms on foot through the lovely woods from Jageshwar group of Temples. There we discovered the story behind Jageshwar and Vridh Jageshwar
Story of Jageshwar
Books though the transferor of the knowledge over generations but fails to be as effective as one to one conversation and i witnessed it, when a shabby looking small old man began the narration. The narration supported by strong faith made us familiar to the our own mother land.
Yuga's ago King Vashrat the father of Parvati Mata(wife of Lord Shiva) conducted a Hawan in which he invited all the Gods and Goddesses except Lord Shiva. Red hot in anger Parvati Matahe reached the place of Hawan, even being stopped a lot by the Lord Shiva(as HE already knew the result).
Reached there Parvati Mata asked HER father(king Vashrat) for insulting the Mightiest God(Lord Shiva) of all. In reply King Vashrat stated that a Person(Lord Shiva) who lives in jungle is not worthy enough to be invited for such big a Ocassion. Even On the continuous warning from Parvati Mata, HER father didnt stop insulting Lord Shiva. As the result of which SHE offered HERSELF to the Hawan-Kund, stating that SHE has no right to live after bringing so much disgrace to HER husband.
Lord Shiva, intensely disturbed from this left all HIS responsibility of managing the World and wondered from place to place. During this phase HE reached Jageshwar, where the women of Rishi Sapt-Rakeshwarof, who were looking for fruits and vegetables saw HIM(Lord Shiva) nude in jungle. Seeing so they ran away being scared.
When Rishi asked why didn’t they brought the fruits and what will they have to eat now? Than the women told the Rishi that there saw a Jogi with a powerful aura standing nude in jungle because of which they got afraid and ran away. Listening to this Rishi got angry and with his power of worship he made the Lord Shiva to be distributed in Lings as punishment. Result of which is the Jageshwar.
One also finds that the Ling in Jageshwar is the only Ling in the world which has the Third Eye of the Lord Shiva.
Story of Vridh Jageshwar
The Mystery of Vridh Jageshwar was even more interesting. The Chaukidar told us that no one knows about the power and mystery of the Temple completely. Only this much is known that King Chand was moving from here for a battle. He saw an amazing thing that a cow is milking over a stone own its own. He was amazed. When he checked the place he saw a Shiv-ling carved in there. Seeing this, he prayed that if he wins the battle he will make a Temple here.
The king won the battle and as per his words he made the temple. For the Temple the stone is collected from the place around 10-12 kms below kms away known as Panvanola. The Stone available and gathered from the place was sufficient enough to make the temple, after which they found no more stones.
Back to trek.
After listening to this we were amazed. But now it’s the time to Walk back. We took the Road rather than the jungle this time. Will walking back one will discover the hospital made by the English. Coming back we stop at a Himdarshan Lodge and asked him to prepare the Jhuli-Chawal for us. For a while we enjoyed the Sun and the surroundings with a small puppy.
Roughly around 3 p.m. we reached Panvanola which is 10 km from Vridh Jageshwar and catch a Jeep For Chitayi Golu temple. After offering the prayer at Golu Devta Temple we left to Almora and halted ourselves for the day at Pavan Hotel.
Keeping our luggage we left to see the KMVN of Almora. It was around a km away but was beautiful. Coming back we had the dinner and went back to our hotel. We came across many drunk walking on the road on way back to hotel.
Day-3
Hardly 12 kms away from Almora, Kasar Devi road is impressive if one walks else he don’t has to cherish much. Sir not satisfied with the place even skipped the temple and asked the driver to move to Binsar Sanctuary right away.
At binsar entry for the first time in my life I used my student I-card for the discount, that too when it was expired. The person asked it is valid upto 2008 and my reply was mba is for two years I have to get it renewed … ehhehe….
With this we moved in the sanctuary area and believe me it was awesome the place is covered with thick woods all over. The car stopped at KMVN(binsar) from where we have to walk for around 2 kms for the Zero Point.
Zero point is the top point there from where one sees the Himalyan ranges till where one’s eyes can see.
Sitting there for almost 1 hour we enjoyed every bit along with our modeling in different poses with the landscape. Soon the time calls “move back “ and we have too.
Coming back to Almora we purchased some speciality of Almora froma shop at the corner of the entery gate of Bisnsar.
Reaching Almora we explored the Bhotiya market and had our lunch. Sir liked the Chana Chole and Dahi with the Tandoori Roti and ate one etc this time. Exploring the Almora to its fullest we finally look for the bus to Bhowali at 5:15p.m.. But Failed to find one, as booking of the seats were over by 12p.m.
Having no choice left we took a jeep to Haldwani. And I enjoyed the just corner of the seat all the way back, as 10 seater was carrying 15.
Some how holding ourselves , sir and I was discussing that the trip is leisure one and too hard this time.
But but but….. leisure trip and that too sir and me…. No rather never is suitable.
Just crossing the Bhimtaal the front Tyre valve broke just before a sharp turn. And everyone’s heart was in there mouth. All said “kismat aachi thi bach gaye thodi aur age hoti to aaj toh ho gaya tha kaam.. “
Sir and me looked at each other and reviewed our lines. At 8 p.m. on hills you are standing on the road with the chilly breeze waiting for some other options to help you out.
The driver took the charges till Haldwani and adjusted the 15 in tits and bits. As two were adjusted on the bikes, two in car and 4 on trolly and finally sir and me got the truck as the option.
We have to take it. We threw our bag at the back and climbed the truck. The Dust carrier welcomed us with strong jumps and twist and turns. We find it hard to be stationary. Finally sir and me stuck us to the two corner and some-how enjoyed the way with channa eating.
But one can find good in every odd. Sir said Saurabh I.P. University me aise kitne bache hoge jinhone aise travel kara ho, So see excel so many… hahaha…. “ but enjoyment came to end when the Truck stopped at Mcdonals No.1 and asked us to get down and to catch a Auto. Sir asked the reason he stated No- entry for truck, but reason is something else.
We without having much debate got down and catch a auto and then the bus for the Delhi.
Note:-
- Rooms are costly even in off season
- Bus service is not so good. Last bus leaves almora at 6p.m. for Delhi
- Market gets close by 7 in evening.
Difficulty level :- Easy

Tungnath Ji and Deoria Taal
Tungnath Ji, the Temple of Shiva, what a trek to take my first step in world of trekking. In short the first step to undiscovered zone out of this materialist and knowledgeable world, where everything speaks about the soul and peace to rest in….
My masters’ degree gave me the most pleasant surprise that even my school and graduation failed to gave. Even though at times, I fought at home to have permissions for trekking but never got one.
Knowing each other for about 2years my Lecturer of strategic development(Mr. Himanshu Dutt) laid the strategy of this trek and some how the execution was perfect.
Still! I can recall when sir discussed about his plan and asked me to accompany him while sharing his worry of walking and walking long. I don’t know what he saw in the skinny boy. Well, my reply was sir “aap chalne ki chinta mat karo, chal me lunga aap bas mere ghar walo ko mana lo”(hahaha).
Then I first asked my sister and created an emotional scene saying "I have never been allowed for outing. Not even at school when even when my cousins were allowed for trip was to Jaipur. Every time you(famiy) guys ask for some responsible person who can look after. Now my lecturer is going what’s the issue". Finally I won the argument.
On 10th march, sir resigned from the college and on 11th we left for the trek. I reached sir's home at around 7 in the evening and after a good dinner along with some deserts we left forour journey. My stomach was overloaded. We reached the ISBT at Kashmiri Gate and around 8:30 we sat in the bus to the Rishikesh.
Sir gave me few tips before getting in the bus such as keep your bag with you and take care of belongings. In march starting when the weather is good enough, the irritating sound of loose windows and the strong chilly breeze from these windows made us struggle entire night for sleep. Sir keep consoling me in different ways as it was my first trip.
Finally, relieved from the hard uncomfortable seats and those clinching noise of windows we reached the Rishikesh at around 3:40a.m. in the morning. We decided to catch the first bus of hills and started walking towards the bus stand which is few km away. Walking in morning time on dark roads with sound of dogs barking was an experience that still thrills.
We caught the bus on the way and sat on the last seats. Same things repeated, those irritating noise of windows with strong chilly breeze and our struggling eyes for sleep. The bumpy road and first high altitude experience didn’t took too long to make me puke.( thank God I was seated at window). Sir sleeping in tits and bits, was unaware about it. After several pukes, we reached Rudraparyag Ghat and had some tea with fried bread as breakfast after attending the nature's call.
From here we took the jeep as it is comfortable and takes less time. I sept all the way till we made it to the GMVN of Ukimath. The cook and care taker already knows sir as he has been to the place earlier. At around 1.30 p.m. we left for Chopta after having some tea and lunch. we walked for 5 kms and had fun with school kids with whom sir also spoke in Garhwali.
After this, we finally catch the jeep we were waiting for. It is the jeep of Maya deep rest house at Dugal- Bhitta. This is only jeep that one gets during no-tourist times to chopta at fixed time. Sitting in the jeep we discussed our worry of covering the remaining distance in just 2hrs. Reaching Dugal Bhitta I agained puked and now sir was seriously worried about me making it to the Temple.

But somehow I holded myself and after having some maggi and tea we tried making arrangement for night stay in PWD. But after many discussion failed to have one. Finally, we had to stay at Maya Deep(which is few yards down from the road) as we can't even go to Tungnath and neither can we go back. After taking the room we visited the trekker's route from Dugal-Bhitta to Chopta. And when dusk started turning dark we came back to our rest house. The experience was not good at Maya Deep, seriously, they neither provided the candles for night and nor the hot water in the morning. Even! we wake up earlier and wake them stating that we are leaving.
Water was ice freezing at 6.30 in the morning and sir warned me not to apply soap on face after struggling for removing his soap so applied and being freezed by teh cold water. After touching the water I quickly accepted sir's advice. We left for the Temple at quarter to 7a.m.
We loose our breathe very quickly while trekking the steep slope, as the body temperature was down due to which our breathing was not synchronized with the pace of walking. Sir adviced to have some chocolate as it has carbohydrates and helps in keeping one self energetic. Each and every step for me was a paradise. We played the skeletons and clicked photo lying in the arms of the nature. Soon at 8:15a.m. we reached the entry gate of Tungnath ji. From here the trek of 3-5 km is left. Here we had “daal bhat” with tea and got 2 aloo paranthas packed. IIM student were also their but very reluctant to interact.
Enjoying the nature
In the name of Lord Shiva we stepped the path of the temple and on the way sir gave me tips of being good trekkers such as do not liter, and as good and obedient student I kept all the wrappers in my pocket.
Through the woods one comes out to the land of snow. For the first time I witnessed such thing and was fully pumped to explore it more and more. Sir was worried and on constant intervals asked me to be careful and also taught me how to walk on snow. Things were exciting I was eager to learn more and more and more….
Sir clicked my few photos on the snow. Their we find someone has written Divya on snow. We captured it as a gift to our friend Divya sitting back at home. And decided to tell her that see how much we missed you that we wrote your name there.
Soon snow fall started and withing no time drizzle took the shape of strong breeze but for me it was fun being unaware of the other side. Though sir was worried as he confessed later on. We reached the Temple before our feet had called it for the day. But seeing the temple we were recharged. After thanking THE for the trek we had our parantha in the small shed besides the temple. Sir wanted to trek Chandrashilla but seeing the snowfall and our preparation for the situation decides to return back.
Coming back we slided a bit which was new fun for us. We saw a slope and decided to slide again. Sir gave it a thought but my words “sir aise mauke bar bar nahi milte” put his thought aside. Sir in my concern decided to go first. He got stuck in between and by the time he could have stopped me I was also stuck just behind him. We both struggled hard as both of our legs were dug in the snow upto the waste. Somehow got out of it. And I said “sir mar gaye, sari jagah baraf he, haath toh gaye..” and was literally jumping on my feet.
Well after this we didn’t slide any more, and by 2:30 p.m. we got back to Chopta. Their we again had the maggi with tea and start walking to Ukhimath. Enjoying the nature walk to Chopta, we reached at 7 in the evening. Then we visited the Temple, with our feet tired we struggled walking to the place. We reach their at the time of aarti and after that we went to market to make calls and take thing for sweet dish ”halwa” as sir asked the GMVN cook to make it for us.
The next day 14th morning again we left early for Deoria Taal. We took the trek for Deoria taal from Mastura way back from Saari( jeeps goes till Saari) and once got misguided too. Finally, making to the Saari village we saw the mighty mountains standing wide and straight on top of which is Deoria Taal. In Saari we met few school kids and enjoyed a bit.

The sun was too harsh this day. We were completely drained out in the mid-way from Saari to Deoria taal. But some how we reached their. Only two shops were their along with the forest house. At shops we ate some biscuits and had tea. After which we lie down for some time. The Chaukhamba range was very clear from the Taal.
Deoria- Taal
Soon we started walking back and on the way enjoyed the nature. For the first time i saw THe mountain eagle and God how big it was. While coming back sir also got a marriage proposal from the group of village women. Sir had no words except to smile while I was enjoying the moment thoroughly. Around 7p.m. we got back to GMVN but the day isnt over yet. Again we went to the market to buy the juice of Borash and Malta.
Finally, the next day wake up bit late and had bath after 3 days. After that we walked down few km and sat near the river where sir and i holded fish in the hand. After this, we took the bus and had a dip at Rudraparyag where two holy rivers Mandakani and Alaknanda meets.
From here we took a jeep to haridawar where we ate some spicy stuff and caught the bus for Dehli.
